Mathematics and Statistics
Students are placed by the department on the basis of AP scores and a departmental placement exam. Students who complete MATH 116 with a grade of C- or better, without having taken MATH 113, will receive credit for MATH 113. This credit does not count toward the concentration or minor. Students who complete MATH 216 with a grade of C- or better, without having taken MATH 116, will receive credit for MATH 116.
Students who have taken Multivariable Calculus in high school may be placed in MATH 224W. If they took Multivariable Calculus at a college, then they get Hamilton credit for MATH 216 whether or not they take MATH 224W at Hamilton. Students who complete MATH 224W with a C- or better will get Hamilton credit for one Hamilton calculus course. If they have taken AP Calculus BC or IB Math HL, then they get credit for MATH 116. Should they choose to concentrate or minor in mathematics, the requirement for the second calculus course (whether this is MATH 116 or MATH 216) will be waived; this second calculus course must be replaced with an elective, so that the total number of courses for the concentration is nine and for the minor is five.
The Math and Stats Department does not automatically award credit for AP Statistics. However, students earning a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics exam may place directly into MATH 254 and receive credit for MATH 152 upon completion of MATH 254 with a grade of C- or better.
