The goal of the Theatre Department is to teach students to think and express themselves creatively while at the same time learning discipline, time management, and solid group-building and leadership skills.
Students Will Learn to:
- Exhibit competence in production/design of theatre
- Exhibit competence in acting/directing of theatrical performances
- Analyze plays/productions as aesthetic/cultural productions related to institutional and social hierarchies
Beginning with the Class of 2021, a concentration in theatre consists of 10 credits: THETR-100, THETR-102 or THETR-201, THETR-105, THETR-141, THETR-142, THETR-212, THETR-303, THETR-307; THETR-550 or THETR-560; and two (2) electives from 200-or-300-level courses.
Concentrators in theatre fulfill the Social, Structural, and Institutional Hierarchies requirement by completing any of the following courses: THETR-100, THETR-102, THETR-141, THETR-142, THETR-212, THETR-236, THETR-238, THETR-303 or THETR-307.
Majors should audition or interview for all mainstage productions (THETR-141 and THETR-142). THETR-105 should be taken before the completion of the sophomore year.
The Senior Program requirement in theatre may be fulfilled through satisfactory completion of one of the following options: a Senior Thesis (THETR-550), which may be a research paper or the composition of a play; or Senior Performance/Production (THETR-560), which may be an acting showcase, the directing of a play or designing for a departmental production. Students falling below the 3.0 (85) average may be required to take the research option or to register for an independent study prior to the project as preparation.
Departmental honors will be awarded on the basis of a cumulative record of 92 or above in all courses counting toward the major, satisfying departmental expectations, and distinguished achievement on the Senior Project.
A minor in theatre consists of THETR-100 and four electives, two of which must be at the 200-level.
