THETR-207 Contact Improvisation
Contact Improvisation is a duet movement form in which practitioners communicate through touch, momentum, and weight. This studio-based class introduces basic contact improvisation (CI) techniques, including embodied listening and responding, leading and following, spontaneous decision making, and co-creation. We will also consider the broader implications inherent in CI: consent, trust, boundaries, non-hierarchical leadership, and accepting and respecting differences. Course readings and viewings contextualize the practice of CI historically, culturally, and socially, with special attention to gender, race, and disabilities/mixed abilities. Contact Improvisation is practiced by people of all ages, genders, abilities, and skill levels; no prior dance experience required.
