SOC-259 Gendered Lives, Sexual Beings

In this course we will explore gender as something that is done through social interactions that uphold norms of masculinity and femininity and/or disrupt them to make space for non-binary and transgender identities. We will consider what it means to “do” gender today as compared to in the past and how this is linked to our sexual lives. We will start by learning foundational theories before exploring the most cutting-edge contemporary studies. Throughout the course, we will pay particular attention to how inequalities of gender and sexuality are experienced, maintained and disrupted within different contexts. We will also consider how these inequalities intersect with other systems of oppression such as race, social class, and citizenship status.
