NEURO-109 Cognitive Neuroscience in Film, Art, and Media

Filmmakers and artists have long used the intricacies of the mind as source material for compelling explorations of the human condition. Through activities, reflections, and discussion, students in this course will examine the psychological and neural underpinnings of such creative endeavors. We will use examples from film, art, and media to critically consider topics such as the difference between the world we sense and the world we perceive; the role of mechanisms such as attention, learning, and decision-making in crafting our narratives; and the benefits and pitfalls of being influenced by perceptual and social patterns in our environment.
