MDRST-308/408 Cultural and Racial Alterities in Premodern Spain
This course examines the evolution of ideas about groups of people based on differences in religion, language, skin color, and other bodily features from the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century. The course follows an interdisciplinary approach that centers on literary representations along with artistic materials and historical documents. While focusing on the Christian perspective, the content highlights the interactions between Christians, Jews, and Muslims—who coexisted in the Iberian Peninsula throughout the Middle Ages—and their impact on the development of Spanish literature and culture. Readings include works from Alfonso X of Castile, Juan Manuel, Miguel de Cervantes, medieval travelers, and members of minority groups.
