JLJS-245 Truth and Justice in Latin America

Since the 1980s, Latin American countries have undergone significant transitions toward democracy, following periods marked by profound violence and extreme turmoil. This course will explore the violence that preceded these transitions in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, Colombia, and Mexico. It will also analyze the different measures instituted by these nations to uncover the truth and combat impunity for the commission of past human rights abuses and international crimes, assessing their effectiveness and impact in enabling societies to move forward. This course will specifically highlight the complex challenges these countries have faced in implementing truth and justice measures.
