HSPST-330/430 Performing Gender and Sexuality in Premodern Spain
Study of gender and sexuality in premodern Spain with a focus on the influential 17th-century theater. Readings include canonical comedias, plays by female authors, and short pieces performing non-normative sexualities. Additional materials provide context on female education, medical views on differences between sexes, and literary traditions. Discussion topics include social struggles around gender roles, female education, honor, marriage, cross-dressing, transgender identities, and authorship. Modern performances and films, and creative assignments interrogate the significance of premodern performance for contemporary debates about gender and sexuality.
