HSPST-247 "La cuestión del indio": Indigenous communities and their representations in Latin America
Since the founding of Latin American republics, intellectuals have built a strong cultural tradition of nonfiction texts. This course will begin by addressing the fundamental essays of this region. From there, texts that deal specifically with the so-called "Indian question" will be explored. That is, how indigenous communities, their traditions, cultures, languages, and customs can be included or excluded from the idea of the nation. The texts studied include indigenous testimonies, indigenist essays, and documentary films from the twentieth century to the present.
