CHNSE-155 Styles, Criticism, and History: Chinese Literature from the 1900 to the Present
As China ended its centuries of dynastic rule in 1911, the country underwent unprecedent social, political, and cultural transformations. Departing from the idea of modernization and modernity, this course focuses on the history of China’s revolutionaries and reformations through sampling some of the most influential literature since the beginning of the last century. We will not only read history through literature but also examine the historical motivations for literary movements, (sub)genres, styles, and innovations. Secondary readings will introduce students to the most influential contemporary approaches to modern Chinese literature, such as postcolonial theory, theory of the lyric, and new materialism.
