ANTHR-271 Language and Power

This course focuses on important ways that language and other semiotic systems are used in building and maintaining power relations, in sometimes subtle and culturally specific ways. Readings include both ethnographic studies and theoretical work about language and power across a range of disciplines and cultures. Through course material and activities, students will compare and contrast language practices in different areas of the world and gain new perspectives about notions of power as they emerge and are constructed through language. They will additionally learn to appreciate the challenges of comparing concepts of power, status, and hierarchy cross culturally. Students will have multiple individual and collaborative opportunities to engage with and analyze linguistic data.
