SOC-351 AI and Society

Artificial Intelligence (AI) will shape society in profound ways, disrupting fields like higher education, government, science, or medicine. Yet integrating AI responsibly into society remains difficult. This course explores the sociological dimensions of AI, from its historical roots to today's debates around bias, autonomy, and changing human relationships. Students will critically examine how AI systems perceive, reason, and communicate, with emphasis on machine learning's role in driving AI capabilities. The course also unpacks the politics of algorithms, data, and code, and how AI is socially shaped in practice. Drawing on social science research on technology, work, media, and inequalities, students will investigate how AI can be developed and deployed in ways that align with human values and create meaningful social impact.
