SOC-315 Sociology of Violence
Violence is deeply intertwined with power, inequality, and struggles among social groups, political movements, and the state. It ranges from direct physical harm to structural and symbolic forms that often go unrecognized as violence at all. This course traces how power inequalities enable violence and its erasure, and how state and nonstate violence interact to reproduce or reshape those inequalities. Using a comparative global approach, we examine specific sites and collective contentious events where these dynamics become visible, from prisons and borders to war and militarized conflict, genocide, torture, counterinsurgency, terrorism, and counterrevolution.
