RSNST-214 Hard Feelings

It is hard to talk about some feelings. It is hard to think about some feelings. It can be even harder to feel some of those feelings. Starting in the Romantic period, writers have put the troubled emotional lives of their characters front and center in their work. In this course, we will learn how to make sense of disconcerting feelings in literature, gaining insights into the greater historical and social contexts of what we read along the way. Taking examples from Eastern European literature, our goal will be to discover how these texts can help us navigate difficult conversations around a vast array of “hard feelings,” such as (misplaced or unrequited) love, shame, disgust, grief, discomfort, and apathy.
