RELST-267 Conspiracy Theories and Religion
Apocalyptic visions, prophecies, and experiences of revelation have mobilized, challenged, and sustained the commitment of religious believers and conspiracy theorists alike. But what else do conspiracy theories and religions share in common, and how do they differ? This course explores intersections of religion and conspiracy theories in American culture from the 19th century to the present day. We examine historical materials alongside contemporary analyses, including millennialist tracts and sermons, conspiracy theory message board websites, illustrations of biblical prophecies, and pictograms of apocalyptic visions. Along the way, we consider how categorizations of “conspiracy theories” and “fringe” movements have served as critical sites for theorizing and delimiting the margins of “real” religion and acceptable belief.
