RELST-122 Encountering Hinduism

This course introduces students to Hindu traditions through the lenses of historical and contemporary religious practice. Students will encounter a range of media, including conventional readings, translated excerpts from prominent Hindu texts, films, VR exhibits, and possibly an in-person visit to a Hindu temple in Syracuse. Students will explore prominent sectarian movements within what we conventionally call Hinduism. Further, they will learn how ritual and everyday practices within the lives of Hindus co-constitute “Hindu” as an ascriptive identity.
