PHIL-456 Cultural Appropriation

A seminar on cultural appropriation, the act of taking for one's own use something from a culture of which one is an outsider. We will read recent philosophical work, focusing on aesthetic forms of cultural appropriation. Questions we will explore include: Is cultural appropriation morally objectionable? What might make it so? Under what conditions might cultural appropriation be morally benign? Is everything produced through cultural appropriation aesthetically deficient? Can the moral demerits of cultural appropriation negatively impact its aesthetic value?
