PHIL-449 Seminar in Metaethics
What are we doing when we engage in moral deliberation and discourse? Are we describing facts that exist independently of our attitudes, or merely expressing preferences? This seminar examines the debate over the status of moral norms and judgments, discussing views like moral realism, relativism, and nihilism. Along the way we will also review arguments based on the evolution of moral norms, the psychology underlying moral and social norms, and the phenomenology of moral judgment.
