PHIL-230 Philosophy of Games and Sport

A survey of scholarship in the philosophy of games and the philosophy of sport. We will examine the nature of games and sports (e.g. What is a game? What is a sport? Is every sport a game?) before turning to moral and political issues (e.g. Is sports doping morally permissible? Should women’s sports be inclusive of transgender women?). Students will develop familiarity with ways of theorizing about games and sports and how they ought to be played and organized, as well as approaches to resolving contemporary ethical questions regarding games and sports.
