MUSIC -247 Literature and/as Music

This course explores the complex relationship between literature and music by following three distinct paths distinguished by the middle term joining the two media: literature about music, literature in music, and literature as music. First, we will read a wide variety of literary texts that all grapple with music, from Wordsworth to Toni Morrison and beyond. We will then focus on musical adaptations of literary texts, from the Renaissance to the present day, exploring how music can accentuate, transform, or even undermine meanings latent in written texts. Finally, we will look to contemporary musical artists like Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar whose work has been discussed as “literary,” interrogating what it means to listen literarily and read musically.
