MUSIC-110 Introduction to Music Theory
An introductory survey of the most important aspects of Western music theory necessary for performing, interpreting, and composing music. Topics range from reading notes and rhythms to analyzing and formulating chord progressions. Study of basic musical structures of the Western classical tonal idiom ("classical" music) and contemporary popular music practices that have developed from that. No previous knowledge of music required.

Students who can already read music in both treble and bass clefs, and have a basic knowledge of (1) key and meter signatures, (2) major and minor scales, and (3) simple rhythms should instead register for MUSIC-210.
