MEIWS-234 Monarchs, Gods, and Demons: the Art of the Ancient Near East
This course examines the art and architecture of the ancient Middle East, focusing on the interconnected cultures of ancient Iraq (or Mesopotamia, the “land between the rivers”) and Iran. Beginning with the earliest settled village societies and ending with the great empires of Assyria and Achaemenid Persia, we will trace the visual and material development of arguably the world’s oldest civilization. In exploring the “deep time” of the ancient Near East, we will ask fundamental questions about the status and function of images in human society, and how they define our vision of the sacred, political, and mythological.
