MDRST-310 Asia Before Europe: Society, Economy & the State in the Medieval Millennium

Introduces the latest scholarship on economies and societies in Asia before the rise of European colonial-capitalism. Prejudicial views of the "unchanging east" still overshadow the west's understanding of social patterns and political economies from the Fertile Crescent to the Eurasian steppe, the Yangtze, and the Indian Ocean. We will build a critical understanding of the legacies of western chauvinism, and work towards better models for the history of the continent. Also includes readings in significant historical scholarship.
