MDRST-211 Make, Touch, Kiss

Tangible, three-dimensional objects, once made to be held, touched, and even kissed, are far removed from their original contexts in museum settings today. This class is a laboratory in experimentation on making and using pre-modern and early modern art. We will explore the processes of production and reception through hands-on exercises—grinding pigments, playing with parchment, applying gold leaf, and painting polychromy—alongside analyzing primary and secondary sources on objects for devotion. For the final project, students will work in small groups to 3-D model and print an object from museum collections to scale.
