LIT-240/340 Women Writing the Self: 1000 Years of Japanese Autobiographical Women's Writing

This course examines literature by women in Japan from the 9th to the 20th centuries. Women have written about their own feelings and experiences since the Heian period -- we will read diaries, fictional stories, and poetry in which women express their desires, sorrows, joys, and regrets. We will discuss the historical context of the works, what role gender plays in production and consumption of the texts, the nature of autobiographical writing, fiction vs. nonfiction, and other issues.
