LIT-293 The Making of English

History of the English language from its origins in Old English to its present-day proliferation into World English(es). Particular attention to how the internal development of English (its sound system, syntax, grammar and vocabulary) relates to political and cultural transformations among English-speaking peoples throughout history, and how the English language continues to provoke political and cultural controversy.
