LIT-243 Staging Satire: from Ancient World to the 21st Century

This course explores a wide range of dramatic literature, from Ancient Greece to 17th c. France, from 18th c. Austria to 20th c. South Africa. We'll examine how playwrights in disparate times and cultures have used comedy and satire to interrogate issues of class and gender.We'll consider how these performances make laughter a powerful tool for responding to the pressures of political, religious, social, and institutionalpower, and how such performances change over time. Playwrights include: Aristophanes, Moliere, Mozart, Cowley, Shaw, Checkov, Brecht, Fugard, Mtwa.
