Analysis through Israeli Literature and Film of the internal and external conflicts that have shaped Israeli society since its founding as an independent state in 1948. The challenge of forging a national identity and identities out of diverse diasporas and cultures. Responses to repetitive trauma in an evolving Israeli identity. Readings and films engage students in moral, political, ideological and social debates and address the many sociopolitical, historical, and geographical conflicts of this small but ethnically, religiously, culturally and politically diverse society.
