HSPST-327/427 Forms of the Anthropocene in Latin America

The ecological crisis has become not only a political, economic, and scientific concern but also a source of inspiration for cultural production and contemporary critical thinking in Latin America. The primary cause of this preoccupation lies in the irreversible impact of human activities on nature. This phenomenon has been termed the Anthropocene, and this course examines how it is portrayed through a diverse cultural archive by closely reading novels, short stories, fiction films, documentaries, photographs, and performances. Most of the materials to be studied were produced after the 1980s, a period marked by the consolidation of neoliberalism in Latin America and the accelerated impact of extractive industries across the region.
