HSPST-318/418 Literatures, Cultures and Politics in the Spanish Civil War

It is difficult to understand modern Spain without looking back to the far-reaching traumatic years of its Civil War and the later fascist dictatorship. This conflict and its aftermath is a extremely significant event, whose effect can still be felt in today's Spain. In addition to studying the political, social, and cultural history of the Spanish civil war, this course will also focus on the interaction between aesthetics and politics, the relation between reality and its representation. The course will explore a wide range of cultural materials produced during the war and also contemporary materials including fiction, film, photography, and testimony in order reflect on the politics of memory and current debates surrounding the exhumation of mass graves.
