HSPST-304/404 Race in Contemporary Spanish culture

This course delves into Spain's cultural transformation catalyzed by the influx of migrants and the growing number of Afro-Spanish artists. Materials include political documents, performance, film, and literature, as we examine multiculturalism in Spain from the mid-1980s to the present. The course explores shifts in public perception, socioeconomic impacts, and the evolving cultural narratives that migrant communities have shaped and reshaped. In tackling these topics, we consider the challenges and opportunities arising from the experiences of first-generation immigrants and the dialogue between diverse identities in Spain. The course includes a required one-day (Saturday) trip to New York City to see a Spanish performance.
