HSPST-243 Introduction to Latin American Indigenous Cultures

Over the past three decades, Indigenous movements have become prominent forces in Latin American politics, society, and culture. This course explores the diverse Indigenous cultural production across different regions of Latin America, including Mesoamerica, the Andes, Amazonia, and the Southern Cone, to examine the socio-cultural and political contributions of these communities. We will study chronicles, films, novels, short stories, journalistic articles, poems, and artistic performances from the Maya, Quechua, Kichwa, Mapuche, Aymara, Zapotec, Mazahua, and Awajún nations. Special attention is given to issues related to racial tensions, territorial displacement, ecological justice, linguistic sovereignty, and anti-colonial thought.
