HIST-207 Civil Rights in the Twentieth-Century United States
Reconsideration of the history of the Black freedom struggle from the late nineteenth century through the Black Power era, with a particular focus on the “long civil rights movement.” Course readings and lectures will consider the biographies of key figures, case studies of events and organizations, speeches, essays, film, and other print and aural media, with attention to intersecting histories of race, gender, labor, religion, sexuality, war, empire, Black internationalism, Pan-Africanism, and the law.
