HIST-105 Introduction to Latin American Studies: History, Society, and Culture

What is Latin America? No one language, history, geography, government, or religion unifies the nations and independent states stretching from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of the Americas. However, Latin America clearly does exist. This course explores this energetic and often contradictory region, forged by the merging of different cultures, histories, and resistances. In this gateway to the Latin American studies minor, each week will focus on a key question: What is Latinx? How do indigenous histories shape life in the present? Was race invented in the time of the European conquest? What governmental systems have emerged in the region, and how do people embrace or resist them? Does Latin America have a common culture?
