GOVT-311 Transitions to Democracy
Examines the origins and durability of transitions to democratic forms of governance in authoritarian states. Topics include the roles in democratization played by leadership, ethnic diversity, political institutions, and geography. Emphasis on critical reading of the large theoretical and empirical literature on democratization. Case studies will be drawn from the countries of the former Soviet Union and East-Central Europe, although students interested in other parts of the world are welcome.
