GOVT-294 Research Lab: The Politics of Policing
In this hands-on "research lab," students work collaboratively to conduct research on the politics of policing. While police are tasked with providing law and order, they are also a central tool through which states repress their political opponents. Police are also political actors in their own rights--seeking to advance their own interests, sometimes at the expense of the state. This course examines debates over the role of police in society, causes of police violence, trends in police militarization, and challenges of police reform, helping put recent development in the United States in comparative and historical perspective. It will provide students with the opportunity to better understand research in the social sciences, as well as to develop data analysis and visualization skills.
