GOVT-223 Political Parties and Ideologies

This course provides a basic overview of the major questions that have motivated academic research on political parties and ideologies in the United States for the past half-century. These questions include: why are parties formed? Do parties matter? How did conservatism and liberalism develop as distinct ideologies? How did they come to be adopted by the two major parties? And how do these parties' ideologies influence American politics? We will examine these questions through a combination of academic articles and books, news articles, and historical accounts.
