GOVT-206 Soft Power and the Global South
For decades, power in terms of foreign policy strategies was understood through the lens of hard power (e.g., coercive diplomacy & military intervention) to enforce national interests. Soft power, or the ability for states to shape the preferences of others through attractive power, is employed by states to influence how governments and populations in other countries perceive them. From educational exchanges to music and sports, this course examines soft power approaches employed by both large states and smaller ones mainly from the Global South. Through guest speakers, film, and in-class activities, the class will investigate how a country’s size and resources impact its soft power strategies and their effectiveness.
