FRNCH-419 The Extraordinary Everyday in Contemporary French Novels and Films

In this seminar focused on the post 2000 period, students will read widely and quickly. They will practice close reading and close viewing of an emerging canon of contemporary French novels and films in which everyday life and habitual routines, separate from grand political narratives, intersect with broader social, historical, and affective questions. Through comparative analysis, students will explore how literary and cinematic forms produce meaning and shape representations of excitement, anticipation, intimacy, and trauma. We will also read for the pleasure of reading. Readings and screenings include works by Annie Ernaux, Maylis de Kerangal, Patrick Modiano, Jean-Philippe Toussaint, Virginie Despentes, and Emmanuel Carrère, as well as contemporary films exploring everyday life.
