ENVST-342 Sociology of Climate Change and Climate Action
In the face of the ongoing climate crisis, we are also witnessing deployment of climate solutions: electrification of transportation, renewable energy development, reforestation initiatives, and reductions in animal agriculture. How do communities react to these approaches to climate action? We unpack theoretical and on-the-ground perspectives on what climate change means among different groups of people and explore people’s social location influences how they understand and respond to it individually and collectively. We examine how colonialism, and macroeconomic structures shape perspectives on the experience of the climate crisis and responses to it. Students apply their theoretical understanding in structured community conversations about climate solutions with community stakeholders.
