ENVST-335 Sonic Ecologies

This course examines sound as a critical lens for investigating power dynamics within environmental and ecological context. Drawing from sound studies, environmental humanities, acoustic ecology, media studies, and the arts, the course explores how sound both reflects and produces relationships among humans and nonhumans. A central component of the course using Unreal Engine to design immersive virtual soundscapes that articulate dimensions of sonic power. By the end of the course, students will be able to critically analyze sonic environments, understand sound as an environmental governing tool, and to translate modes of sonic power into sonic experiences for a general audience.
