ENVST-332 Foundations of Environmental Law

This course introduces students to the American legal system through the lens of environmental law. We cover the evolution of federal environmental law from common law to modern statute and regulation. Students learn about the sources of environmental law, how state and federal laws interact, the role of regulations, constitutional guard rails, and the place of international law. The course reviews various regulatory models and their policy implications. We also cover emerging issues and theories in environmental law, such as natural resource personhood and an expanded public trust doctrine. Although focused on federal environmental law, students learn tools and methods of analysis applicable to the study and understanding of other bodies of law as well.
