DANCE-231 Introduction to African Dance

An introduction to traditional African dance technique, combining studio instruction with the study of African cultural traditions around dance. Students will learn dances of Western Africa, focusing on Ivory Coast and Ghana. A traditional drummer will accompany each class, and each unit will culminate in a group in-class performance. Students will also do independent research on some aspect of dance in African culture and/or the African diaspora.
