Our contemporary moment is defined by seemingly deep and durable polarization. But what are the controversies in American society around which we quarrel and feud? And what makes these areas so emotionally charged and seemingly intractable? This speaking intensive course explores and examines some of the quintessential American disagreements about politics, culture, and policy, demanding that all students in the class come prepared to understand each position on its own terms and learn how to practice informed disagreement.
