CNMS-349 Queer and Trans Cultural Production
This course explores queer and trans cultural production, ranging from zines, film, novels, photography, television, short fiction, painting, fanfiction, installation, poetry, performance art, music, video games, and more. On one level, it offers an interdisciplinary investigation of queer and trans representation, and both the possibilities and limitations of positive images and mainstream LGBTQ visibility. On another level, we explore the ways that writers, filmmakers, and artists find meaning through LGBTQ cultural production and artistic practices. We will also consider the politics of publication and distribution. The course takes up an intersectional approach, thinking about how LGBTQ cultural production is shaped by gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, class, and ability.
