CNMS-103 Art of Advertising

Advertising images are everywhere, beckoning us to look and believe their message. But how do such images actually work, and where do their visual strategies come from? This writing-intensive seminar equips students with the foundational skills of visual and contextual analysis necessary for the study of art and visual media. We will study how artists, designers, photographers, and advertising professionals created influential campaigns in print, on television, and online. Students will learn to analyze how images and text work together, how ads capture our attention, how they borrow from different visual traditions, and how they shape our desires, often through troubling visual conventions.
