CLASC-304 The Rhetoric of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

This course examines the enduring importance of the "decline and fall" narrative of the Roman empire. Students will combine modern historical research on the period with narratives written in the 4th to 6th centuries CE to evaluate and critique rhetorical appeals to the idea of Rome's downfall. Central topics include the delineation of national identities, trends and tropes in historiographic narratives, and the question of who benefits by telling a story of collapse.
