CLASC-235 Material Culture of Ancient Greece

We will study architectural and other material remains of several major archaeological sites in ancient Greece, covering the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic Period. We will learn how to use material remains to draw conclusions about political, social, and cultural history. The course places a strong emphasis on the exchange of archaeological and artistic influences with contemporary cultures of Europe, Africa, and Asia. For example, we will consider how technological advances from Egypt helped the Minoans build the palace of Knossos; why the Athenian Acropolis was built when it was and in the way that it was; and what pottery can tell us about trade networks, funerary practices, and civic identity.
