CHNSE-243 East Asian Women in Film
This course examines portrayals of East Asian women in mainland Chinese, Hong Kong, Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean, and Hollywood films, with an emphasis on the post-#MeToo era. Through close analysis of narrative films and documentaries, students learn to investigate how gendered experiences of oppression, resilience, and resistance are represented, challenged, and reimagined in diverse cultural contexts. Combining film studies and gender studies, the course highlights both shared and divergent regional patterns and encourages students to consider how cinema shapes public debates on social change, agency, and justice. All films include English subtitles. Course requirements include film viewings, presentations, active discussion, a creative project, and a final paper.
