ASNST-290 Global Asia: Pluralism and Contexts
This methods course is designed to introduce students to the theoretical and conceptual frameworks to study Asia. This course will adopt an interdisciplinary and comparative lens to study multiple regions, cultures, and histories of East, South and West Asia. How are the particularities of Asian identity reflected in visual cultures? In what ways have scholars evaluated textual and material sources to study different Asian religions such as Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and Confucianism? How has the colonial experience shaped periodization debates, modernity, and everyday life in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar? We will examine the diversity of Asian languages and literatures in translation, as well as global and transregional connections evident in travelogues, trade networks, and musical exchanges.
